a night at the movies...

I have a confession to make.  When there is a movie that I really want to see, I prefer to go alone.  So tonight after work, I took myself on a movie date.  I thought it was a amazingly charming film with a fabulous cast, made all the more wonderful if you have ever read A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway! I loved gazing at all the Parisian scenery, especially since I remember all the places from our visit last summer!  The movie made me laugh (quite a bit) and smile and the very best part was at the end of the movie the whole audience clapped - it had been a long time since that has happened in a movie theatre(for me anyways.) Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a fun, interesting movie, you will love it!!

P.S. My George has a new movie coming out soon called The Descendants, and it looks wonderful!

Hollywood Classic Movies

A few weeks ago some of my senior friends that I bring movies to asked me to find some Kirk Douglas movies that weren't westerns. I came across The Bad and the Beautiful (that won 5 Academy Awards) and loved it - a true hollywood classic! Any ideas on more Kirk Douglas movies in a romantic role?

It truly is a wonderful life...

It just isn't Christmas without watching this movie. I get

chills just seeing this. For every one of us that feels

our life doesn't matter - this movie proves us all wrong.

The smallest gestures can and have truly

changed the course of people's lives. We all matter,

we're in this together, so this weekend when we are

all scurrying about - be kind to strangers and loved ones,

share a smile and always remember that despite all

the hard times we go thru, this life we have

is truly a wonderful one!

Only one more week of holiday movies - take time

out of your busy days & enjoy some great classic movies!

another wonderful holiday movie..

It Happened On 5th Avenue

This movie was recommended by one of my fabulous

senior friends that lives at an assisted living home

that I visit weekly to bring movies. I always ask

for movie recommendations and because of that

Everyday Matinees For Seniors has over 600

wonderful films. This movie is one that I really

enjoyed and definitely recommend!

It's Complicated..

One of the really cool things about living in the Los Angeles

area, is free movies. Yep you heard it - free movies!

Whenever you go to movies around here they are

always handing out flyers to go to movie screenings

of soon to be released movies. Some you have to fill

out a evaluation form of things you'd like to change

about the movie and some you just watch them. Tonight

was one of those just watch it nights - I think they

want to see if people laugh in the right spots and so on.

My friend, Sally and I went to see It's Complicated that is

coming out on Christmas day and this romantic comedy loving

girl (me) gives it her two thumbs up - lots of laughter in this movie,

tender moments and a fabulous cast! If you are a fan of

The Office - John Krasinski is absolutely adorable in this movie!

The icing on a very yummy cake was that the screening was held

at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences where the theater

is just gorgeous and comfy the way all movie theaters should be.

Sally and I also have fond memories of this place, as our friend

Sandi was a member of the Academy, and we would go see

movies with her from time to time. We definitely

felt her presence there tonight. This was her kind of movie!

If you want to see a movie that makes you laugh, cry and just

plain old feel good - this is the one to see!

a date with george...

Ok, even though I did have to share his

company with my friend, Sally and a

theatre full of people - I still had a

wonderful afternoon with my

boyfriend, George Clooney.

Sally and I went to see George's very

charming new movie - Up in the Air.

Anyday I get a chance to see George's

smiling eyes it's a good day, and

he did not disappoint!

conversation = a fabulous day!

Here's another thing you may not know about me. I am a major holiday movie buff - I can't get enough of them. I will watch them on every channel I can find and record the ones

I won't be around to watch - I just love them.

I can watch them year round, and often do.

The Holiday season to me is a season of hope, miracles, family and love. To be totally honest, I am not a big crier in real life - but when it comes to holiday movies, my tears flow very freely....maybe that's why I love them so much!

1. What books are on your favorite shelf?

Maeve Binchy - Night of Rain & Stars, Tara Road, Scarlet Feather, to name a few...Sharon Owens - Tea House on Mulberry Street, A Tavern of Maple Street, The Ballroom on Magnolia Street, are my faves. C.A.Belmond - A Rather Lovely Inheritance & A Rather Curious Engagement. My Nancy Drew collection (that I am starting to read again), and my prized Victoria Moran books - Creating a Charmed Life, Younger by the Day & Living a Charmed Life.

2. What DVD's are on your favorite shelf?

I am a definite romantic comedy girl! No apologizing for that one. I DO NOT watch any sort of scary movie at all, so don't try to get me to. haha... I have so many - but my go to movies to cheer me up are: You've Got Mail, Under the Tuscan Sun, Shall We Dance (reminds me of my dad), The Holiday, Amelie, Serendipity, The Philadelphia Story and White Christmas to name a few. I am also a big fan of old movies and musicals. After I finish this, I am going to watch Holiday with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn and You Can't Take It With You with Jimmy Stewart (this last one, my daughter just watched in her History of Cinema class and loved it...I haven't watched it in years, so am enjoying a Saturday Matinee with myself).

3. What are your two favorite cookbooks?

I'm not a big cookbook person. I have always clipped recipes out of magazines, or from my sister as she has some really great basic dishes and easy to make food. I have my handy Betty Crocker that I have had for nearly 30 years and a wonderful book called Food for Friends with alot of really cool recipes....(my son and his wife gave this to me a few years ago.) Now, I get alot of recipes online from the Food Network - Giada and The Barefoot Contessa are my faves!

4. Select 1-3 recipes you would cook for guests.

1. Salmon sauteed in a lemon garlic sauce, broccoli, or mushrooms and spinach sauteed and brown rice.

2. Baked Rosemary Chicken

3. Some sort of chocolate dessert - either pudding or souffle. This time of year - Pumpkin Pie, chocolate chip cookies or snickerdoodles!

5. What will we be drinking that's available.

I would have some white and red wines, San Pelligrino, Sparkling Cranberry Juice, Baileys & Coffee and Espresso Martini's or Cosmos....:)

Ok I'll give you 10 more facts about me:

1. I am my happiest when I am in a bookstore that has a coffee shop, my home away from home.

2. My favorite flowers are Daisy's

3. I am not a pack rat at all - but I live with one.

4. My two favorite jobs ever besides my nonprofit were at Barnes & Noble and a Landscaping Nursery.

5. Iused to rock climb, but am very afraid of heights, so I cried alot! haha

6. I have 52 first cousins on my dad's side. He was the youngest boy of 12 kids - 6 boys and 6 girls. On my mom's side, I have 6 cousins. They live all over the country.

7. I like to sing and dance, but no one really wants to hear me or see me, so it's usually when I'm alone.

8.I love to go places by myself....to the movies or out to breakfast, lunch, dinner or shopping...I just enjoy it so much!

9. I am the baby of the family and my sister says that I got away with everything.

10. I do my best thinking in a tub filled with bubbles and candles all around...

I have a favor to ask...

I started Everyday Matinees For Seniors a few years ago. It is a non profit organization that brings movies on a weekly basis to seniors that live in assisted living homes and board & care homes. We let the seniors take as many movies as they'd like, it is free of charge to them - the only stipulation being that they return it. As we speak we have close to 600 movies. Most of the movies have been suggestions from the seniors themselves, so we have a wonderful collection of films - dramas, comedies, musicals, westerns, independent, foreign films and documentary's....I know you're probably saying to yourself, "alright already, Cathi - get to the point." My favor that I am asking of you is this - I would like some more suggestions of independent, foreign and old classic movies.. I welcome your input and suggestions with great anticipation! I am also getting together my holiday films, so please include those in your list - if you have any favorites! Thanks in advance, I would truly appreciate any and all suggestions! And my senior friends will love you too!
